hryggr explores the relationship between humans and the ocean through a physical and visual landscape in constant transformation. Drawing from the power, depth, and vulnerability of the Atlantic Ocean, the work examines how the contrasts found in nature can mirror human experiences and emotional states.
Through movement, the body gradually transforms, opening space for shifting images, rhythms, and energies. Body, sound, and space merge into a universe moving between the concrete and the dreamlike, between reality and fantasy. The audience is invited to reflect on their own connection to the ocean, to nature, and to the unknown.

The Word hryggr
The title hryggr comes from Old Norse and carries a double meaning: as a noun, it translates to “back,” and as an adjective, “to be sad.” The word may refer to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which from space resembles a giant spine running through the ocean, but also to the grief connected to the environmental destruction shaping our present time.
hryggr is created by Icelandic choreographer Bára Sigfúsdóttir in collaboration with composer Eivind Lønning and Antwerp-based artist Andrea Kränzlin.
The performance is presented in collaboration with Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, and tickets are available through their website. There are two opportunities to see hryggr — October 10 and October 15.

CODA in Bærum
CODA in Bærum is a two-day program in which three performances intersect. hryggr returns on both days at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, while Prison Episodes and FUGACES take place at Bærum Kulturhus. A free shuttle bus will operate between the venues. Read more below.
About Bára Sigfúsdóttir
Bára Sigfúsdóttir is an Icelandic dancer and choreographer based in Oslo. Her artistic work explores the relationship between human beings, nature, and society. Starting from significant themes and questions, she investigates them through the moving body in a poetic, detailed, and vivid way. Improvisation is central to her artistic process, serving as a point of departure for developing musical and multilayered choreographic material. She frequently collaborates with artists from other disciplines who inspire and challenge her work.
Bára’s performances have been presented at national and international venues and festivals, including Venice Biennale, Reykjavik Arts Festival, Ice Hot Nordic Dance Platform, Tanzmesse, Performatik and Julidans, among others. The Lover received six nominations at the Icelandic Performing Arts Awards in 2019, where Bára was awarded Choreographer of the Year and Dancer of the Year.
About Eivind Lønning
Eivind Lønning is one of the most prominent musicians on the Norwegian creative music scene, and has developed his own distinctive sound on the trumpet. He is touring and composing music as a solo artist, and with bands like Streifenjunko and Christian Wallumrød Ensemble. His latest collaboration as a solo artist with Jim O’Rourke, the piece «most, but potentially all» was released on the record label Smalltown Supersound in 2024. Eivind has performed as a soloist with The Norwegian Radio Orchestra, NEON Ensemble, and TIME TIME TIME Opera by Jennifer Walshe and Timothy Morton. As a composer he has made commission works for performance arts, several in collaborations with choreographer Bára Sigfúsdóttir, among them a commission work for the Venice Biennale 2019.
In the duo Streifenjunko with sax player Espen Reinertsen, Eivind Lønning has worked with modern improvisation and extended playing techniques for the trumpet. They have worked closely together for many years to present a truly unique repertoire, which has resulted in 3 critically acclaimed albums.
