In a split second, ballet dancer Marc Brew's life was changed forever.
In 1997, the 20-year-old Australian dancer was involved in a car accident in South Africa, where he was travelling with friends. Now he has created remarkable dance art about the car accident, where he went from being a ballet dancer to a paraplegic in an instant.
The performance is a collaboration with award-winning choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaou. During the height of the Covid pandemic, when the possibility of physical performances was uncertain, Marc Brew and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui spoke over Zoom with the aim of developing a new work together. They shared a plethora of personal stories and got to know each other's backgrounds before meeting in a studio to start working with movement.
an Accident / a Life, is the result of these distanced conversations.
In 2021, Marc Brew impressed with his success ‘un-be-known’ at the CODA festival, which was praised by Norwegian critics and audiences. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui has won a number of prestigious awards. He is regarded as one of the world's most sought-after choreographers.
an Accident / a Life, explores the car accident that led to a severe spinal cord injury and left him with permanent mobility problems. Together, Marc Brew and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui create a scenic universe where movement, sound and visual elements merge to tell a story of survival, resilience and rediscovery. The stage is set for a rare masterclass in Bærum Kulturhus.
